Fit Matters in Men’s Casual Clothing

by | Jul 4, 2011 | Fashion Tips, Image consulting for Men

Casual clothing is more challenging to guys than professional wear because there are far more variables,  options in the stores and of course, discomfort about what really does look good on you.

Some regular queries I get (spoken or unspoken) are:

  • What to wear on a date? (how to look great and desirable)
  • At the Club? (how to look great and “I could care less”)

Here’s the key: focus on fit. Lets’ start with jeans. If you are looking at her behind on the way to the restroom, why do you think she is not looking at yours? Jeans are supposed to fit reasonably closely – the heavyweight cotton has great disguising property, and you can create a look from the inky-est black to summer yacht club white often with a single dependable brand that fits you well.

When you go jeans shopping, PLAN on taking half a dozen pairs into the dressing room and look in the rear view mirror. If you see some semblance of your anatomy from the back end, then focus on the front. Can you sit down comfortably? What about the waist band?

Are last seasons cheeseburgers bulging up over the edges even when you are standing? If so, go up a size, but look for a fit that still flatters your butt and thighs.

Keep trying on – almost every jean manufacturer has style and cut variations. Don’t’ be distracted by the design on the back pocket, or the price tag – when you find a great pair it’s worth it! And when you find one that fits the best,  you can go back to this brand and fit again and again.

Warm outside? How about a great summer short. But, not a heavy, baggy cargo short with pockets that double as a backpack.

Seriously!

Think light poplin fabric, tailored shorts that come to just above your knee. They can be in a myriad of colors, or even a pattern like a plaid. But they are pressed and they don’t flop around on your legs like extra sailcloth.

No shirt/ No service? Casual shirts in the summer can include polo style, youthful tees, short sleeved cotton button downs as well as the roomier Cuban guayabera style shirts.

Again, the fit should mirror your own physique. Look at the shoulder seams, do they sit relatively close to your natural shoulders or down on your arm. If you need more room in the abdomen (for those cheeseburgers) then first try shopping for a roomier cut shirt, and buy larger when all else fails.

Try to keep the fit appropriate to the best part of your body.

Clothes that fit you well allow you to proceed into the room with confidence and a sense of style, and that makes a great impact on your personal presence.
