Executives: What Summer means for your Professional Attire

The advent of Memorial Day often brings on a more casual dress standard at work.

Either by policy, or more commonly that which is unwritten, summer dressing even in the highest levels of  corporate America relaxes in the summer.   Business “Formal” still requires a suit, but with some additional options such as lighter colors, more playful patterns  and cooler fabrics.

You can begin to incorporate tropical weight wool fabrics in taupe or medium gray, along with shirting in brighter colored stripes.  Ties can also be of lighter and brighter colors, and they also don’t always have to be silk – cotton and linen blends go perfectly with cotton and linen blend suiting.

If you don’t own a cotton suit, consider adding one to your wardrobe this year.  Polished cotton khaki suits come in a range of tans to ivory colors, as well as navy. They aren’t expensive – $350 to $600 and will add a great element to your wardrobe. Also – you can use the jacket as a great going out over jeans separate!

Linen is more of a “social” suiting – better for stand up warm summer evening cocktail parties on the lawn than a long commute into the city.  I like linen blends, you get linens coolness and look and a bit of cotton’s performance.
