Are you unknowingly sabotaging your promotability or sales numbers? News Flash: “my clients don’t care how I look” is not true. People make business decisions from those they know like and trust, and part of the emotional component of this decision is if the individual being considered “looks the part”.
Ask yourself: do you have the appearance of someone your client wants to work with? Or your boss wants to promote to management?
There is a lot of variability in this statement.
Appropriate work attire depends on the industry, the climate, the geography. Finance is high formality. IT is low. Summer often comes with a loosening of wintertime formality guidelines (“casual Friday”). There are areas of the country that are more formal than others; major city centers such as New York, Chicago and Washington DC are top. Boston and Dallas are close behind. Cities that are quite informal are LA, Miami, Seattle and most of the South and Midwest.
But in all cases, from defining professional wardrobe as suit and tie or business casual, business demands properly fitting, business apparel.
WAY too casual. This is beach attire. Even the most casual of looks always has closed shoes, shirts with a restrained print and preferably cotton trousers to jeans. This young man looses his professional credibility, even though he is wearing a full business suit.
Because it is much too large, and it comes across as sloppy. This emotional feedback affects our perception of his professional abilities.
