Understanding your shape helps you dress best. If you are an Inverted Triangle read on!
An “inverted triangle” can be defined as a woman’s shape that is larger at the shoulders than her waist and hips. Possibly an athlete, or she carries weight in her arms, breasts and back, her derriere and legs are slim in comparison. She may be long-waisted as well.
The good news – you have two really great attributes – likely a killer bosom and slim legs that you can play up! A hint (or more!) of cleavage is a great way to draw the eye inward away from your shoulders and encourage the eye moving vertically instead of horizontally at your shoulders.
You want to avoid looking top heavy in your clothes, and create a balanced proportion between your top and bottom. To do this you are going to focus on narrowing your shoulders and widening your hips.
One of the easiest ways to do this is with a fitted peplum (flared out from the waist) jacket. If you carry weight in your arms choose half or three quarter length sleeves in your jackets and tops. Bring the focus down – down to your hips with drop waist dresses, hip hugger (if there is no hint of muffin top) jeans with a top that has interest at the hem line – which falls right at your hips.
V necks start the eye traveling downward, and builds a vertical line. Try to start every outfit, whether career, casual or formal with a wide open V of a sweater or dress, or the narrow V of a blouse. What you wear on the top should draw the eye to the center of your body, not to the shoulders.
Keep design details smaller on the top and larger on the bottom.
Dark colors recede and light ones advance, so wear darker on top and lighter on the bottom.
For pants avoid leggings which will make your legs look too thin in comparison to your upper half. Trousers should have slim, straight lines and can have a slight boot cut to create balancing volume below the knee.
Avoid pencil skirts which taper down at your knee. Don’t be afraid of creating volume with full skirts, heavier fabrics or pleats. Try a tulip shaped dress.
